Health Results are Official!
Updated: Nov 10, 2020
We are happy to announce that Rheese's required health tests have been completed and recorded by OFA. The Wirehaired Vizsla Club of America requires all breeding dogs to complete testing for hips, elbows, and HUU, as well as have their eyes examined. The Club does not require eye results to be listed by OFA, however, we wanted to list these results, regardless of outcome. Rheese presented with a very small cataract in her right eye at her first exam. So small, it can only be seen by an opthamologist with highly specialized equipment. After a second exam nearly 7 months later, her eye showed no changes. As such, it is the opinion of our opthamologist that this cataract was likely not inherited. It is small, unlikely to change or grow, will not require treatment, and does not affect her vision or ability to perform in the field or in performance sports. Cataracts can be caused by different things, one being trauma at birth or other incidents when a puppy might bump or bruise an eye. There is very little known about genetic inheritance of cataracts in dogs in general, and even less so in our breed specifically. OFA has agreed with our opthamologist's findings and issued a breeder option. This means that we recognize that she does have an issue in her eye, but with careful selection it can be an option to breed this dog. Because Rheese carries many highly desirable traits in a breed without a large gene pool, and because of the size of her cataract as well as the fact that it does not affect her wellbeing in any way, we feel confident moving forward with her in our breeding program while being very selective in choosing a mate for her. For anyone interested in seeing her results on the OFA website, here is her CHIC# 148309 and you can see all the details on her page on OFA here.
